How I used art therapy to process intense sadness

‘RegenHeration’ is an artwork that I reworked from a piece from a few years ago.

I had just heard news that for the first time in history, a part of Antarctica along the coastline actually didn’t freeze over this Winter and there is now land. The amount of grief that I felt about how climate changes impacting our planet was intense and debilitating, and I actually fell into depression for about a week or so … I just couldn’t seem to rectify a sense of hope.

However, after experiencing my grief, I decided to lean into it with art therapy.

I chose a previous artwork as the basis for transformation and manifestation.

I decided to bring forth all the things I wish for our planet from beautiful, clear oceans and flourishing green plants and flowers that you can see blooming through her hair and the clear, clean waters through her hair … She is Gaia, Our Earth Mother in a way that is regenerative, resourceful and in direct collaboration with us as humans.

By the time I got to the end of this artwork, and it let me know that it felt complete through the softness in my tummy; I had restored hope within myself, because I had connected so deeply with Gaia’s strength throughout the process of creating this artwork.

May we all experience such regeneration within our Souls, Spirits, and Connection with Mother Earth 🌏
