Using Lego in Art Therapy Research 💓
Lately I’ve been absolutely loving using Lego to explore an ongoing inquiry about my neurodivergent felt sense of energy perception. It’s wonderful - I can depict loved ones, nature, home, my boundaries, and how I ‘feel’ and think, both internally in terms of what I empathically perceive beyond my own skin.
In Art Therapy, finding a medium that feels conducive to a feeling or an idea, is pivotal in the therapeutic art process.
For me, Lego represents the capacity freedom, agency, the ability to pivot, move and change interests as I need, to be able to lock things down so that I can experience safety, and an overall sense of play. It’s unlocked a creative part of me that feels full of wisdom and embodied knowing, while still being fun and lighthearted.
That’s what I love about my style of art therapy, informed by my MIECAT training: It’s powerful and deeply meaningful, while being playful and gentle to my senses.
It also reminds me of atoms, coming into manifestation … a topic I am interested in researching more from an empathetic, neurodivergent felt-sense of connection with the space around me, vibrating with possibilities, or a ‘Field of Becomingness.’
As part of my Art Therapy research, I’ve then been pulling my Lego creation photographs into a really cool app called Canva, and making comics with them and also drawing my Lego creations to bring a about a different perspective, and more intuitive wisdom to unfold. Multimodality, or switching between mediums, allows us to experience concepts from different angles, and qualities we may not have previously known, can give rise to new understanding.
Down the track, I’d love to share more of my neurodivergent art therapy research findings with you. It feels like there is a wealth of wisdom, agency and understanding of lived experiencing to share with my fellow neurodivergent kin, and my fellow humanity alike.
Love, Chrissy x
