Expressive Colour Workshop
Hello and welcome to a little sneak peek inside my recent Expressive Colour Workshop in Brighton, Queensland.
It was a beautiful June day, when twelve gorgeous women joined me and my assistant Sambo for a full day of Expressive Art-making. The vibe in the room was so wonderful; just fourteen people with hearts open to the colourful day ahead!
I love to begin my workshops with some freeing, opening, loosening-up exercises. The intention here isn't to make a 'something', it's about colour play and expression. It's really unbelievable how freeing Art can feel when there's no pressure to make it 'look' a certain way!
As the morning progresses, I love to lead my students into how they'd like to feel while they create. A feeling can look like anything and it makes it so fun to play with these possibilities. Plus, it completely takes the pressure off; creating an atmosphere for some seriously prolific Art-making.
After a morning of playing, we return with full tums to an afternoon of expressive techniques and symbolism. My style of teaching is to offer a smorgasbord of mixed media techniques with the group, then we enjoy free-play all afternoon, while I come around and share some one-on-one tuition time with each person.
My little demos are loose, intuitive and not at all about perfection. This is a process for me too and it needs to stay playful, or I would too easily get bogged down in 'getting it right'. My intention words for the day were light and present.
As the day rolls on, we spend the afternoon experimenting with collage, paint pens, drawing, painting and colour symbolism. I love this time, because there's time to connect with each person and we can brainstorm ideas to make our paintings come alive with our own, beautiful uniqueness.
By the end of the day with full hearts, we all get together to share the fruits of our play. This is a wonderful time with plenty of oos and ahhs, as we admire how each of us have uniquely expressed ourselves throughout the day.
If you would love to join me in my third Expressive Colour workshop for 2014, bookings have just opened for a new class on August 31st, at Brighton.
