My Art Therapy Explorations - Engaging with Materials

Earlier this year I recommenced my Masters in Therapeutic Arts with MIECAT.

I find the MIECAT process absolutely soul nourishing and it’s brought me incredible insight into my personal explorations, using a wide variety of artistic mediums as my guides.

This term I am leaning deeply into materials and processes for art-making. I’m challenging my position as an artist and pivoting into embodying the creative process, over working towards an end product. It’s felt wonderful, freeing and delightfully challenging.

Here are a few key artistic inquiry moments I’ve been exploring this term.

‘Self as Maker’ - Identifying my personal traits, cultural positioning, interests and values and how these inform my creative inquiry.

‘Impermanent Nature’ - Exploring art-making with natural materials and gravity, to challenge my natural artful eye for composition and 'artistic prettiness’

‘Nature, Fancy Materials + Found Objects ‘ - This expression come about during an online art jam with my fellow art therapy students.

‘Identifying my wellbeing tool kit’ - Exploring boundaries, chosen thoughts and qualities of wellbeing that are important to me right now, using drawing and watercolour.

‘An Accidentally Pleasing Composition’ - Exploring photography, close up view and new ways to focus. Witnessing how it feels to use a creative medium I don’t know much about.

‘Boundaries + Openness’ - An ongoing emerging form I have amended and changed weekly throughout my studies this term.

All these processes are embedding deeply into my being and influencing how I create and view myself as a maker. I’m excited to weave some of the creative processes into my wellbeing art sessions with people.
