Studio musings - I'm ready to simplify
In recent months I’ve really been feeling the call to slow down and soften. Not just for a few hours, or a day, but long term ... life term. I’m building this awareness into my daily moments, my choices, my plans.
It almost seems against social norms, that success and happiness comes only through hard work and sacrifice. Is that really true? Who says so? Who benefits from this approach? Do you and I? I love to ask myself these questions, challenge perceived limitations in my mind and world around me.
What I’m coming to realise and live, is that as we age and grow, we come to meet new opportunities and experiences to understand ourselves more fully in who we are. Not who we’ve been told to be, or trained to believe. But who we actually are in each moment, in our strengths, subtle nuances and sensitivities. Things we love and things that rock us to our core. It’s important to know about ourselves.
Who we are is completely unique in the universe. Never before has such a swirling mass of energy and experiences come together into the being we are. There’s great beauty in owning this because we each have a right to honour who we are, as unique individuals. All of us. There is space for all of us.
We can’t all fit into the same mould because we were never meant to. For me, freedom comes from knowing and loving and accepting and growing into myself and allowing this self to be seen and witnessed by others. A beautiful byproduct is we can view others as being on their own journey who deserve the same. This we can advocate for.
I don’t pretend to have all the answers, often my insights come from a place of discomfort and challenge. Yet it seems that whenever I slow down and listen, soften and simplify to my core, through meditation, walking, art-making, time in nature, deep intimate discussion with loved ones, that I find a place of loving acceptance for myself. And this expands out to others too. Surely leaning into ourselves is a right worth living.
