Today I'd love to share with you the first finalised design for my upcoming Spring fabrics range. I've been working hard behind the scenes to translate some of my mixed media Artworks into new fabrics, which I'm super excited and admittedly, a wee bit nervous about! Creating fabrics is my gut-dream - the one deep down inside that beckons to be realised someday.

That someday unfolded last night. I uploaded the first of my new designs to Spoonflower (my ethical fabric printing company - love them!) and I waited with anticipation to see how my Art would look repeated to create the fabric design.

Translating a painting into a fabric design is an Art in itself, which has taken me a few years to properly get my head around. 

I personally like my fabrics to retain a 'painterly feel' to them, so they are almost like Artworks on fabrics. In fact, that's just what they are! The challenge for me has always been how to make my Artworks flow over yards of fabric and I've finally cracked that treasure chest open wide.

Here is the recent original Artwork I've been working to translate into fabric, titled 'Serene'. The following image is Serene as a repeat pattern for fabric - you might be as surprised as I was to see the transformation ...

The Serene fabric design above is scaled to 3 yards wide X 42 inches high - she's BIG! 

To make this design, I turned the original 'Serene' Artwork on her side 90 degrees, and ensured the digital file size was large enough to stretch width-wise across the entre 42 inches of fabric. I then mirrored the full Artwork over and over to create the yardage repeat.  Voila!

Can you see how much the repeat process changes the Artwork? I can never anticipate all the new images that emerge from a repeated pattern design. It's like finding clouds in the sky - I see tribal faces in this piece now, whereas in the original Artwork, it's more nature-based.  I'd love to hear what you see in there too!
